First They Killed My Father’ review: Angelina Jolie’s powerful take on Cambodian genocide

Originally published September 14, 2017 at 10:12 am | Updated September 14, 2017 at 12:29 pm

The Cambodian genocide of the late 1970s is seen through the eyes of a young girl in this quietly powerful epic directed by Angelina Jolie. It opens at the Crest in Seattle and shows on Netflix starting Sept. 15. Rating: 4 stars out of 4.

The central, defining image in “First They Killed My Father” are the eyes of a child.

The child is Loung Ung (Sareum Srey Moch), a young Cambodian girl. Her eyes reflect confusion, fear and, yes, a sense of wonder as they look upon a world turned upside down. They’re eyes reflecting above all the child’s struggle to comprehend the incomprehensible.

The incomprehensible here is the Cambodian genocide of the late 1970s, when it’s estimated close to 2 million people — a quarter of the country’s population — was exterminated by the communist Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot.

Loung became a humanitarian activist and co-wrote the screenplay with the picture’s director, Angelina Jolie, a prominent humanitarian in her own right. Loung’s story dovetails closely with Jolie’s concerns, and it’s inspired her to create a movie of epic scale and impressive quiet power.

Shot on location in Cambodia in the Khmer language, it’s a family story with the travails of Loung and her parents and brothers and sisters serving as a microcosm of their nation’s anguish.

The act from which the title is derived doesn’t occur until almost halfway through the movie. Until then, Jolie presents a detailed portrait of a loving, protective father (Phoeung Kompheak) and his gentle-spirited wife (Sveng Socheata) trying as best they can to keep the family together and help their kids cope with the relentless, step-by-step process of dehumanization they’re subjected to by the Khmer Rouge. City residents, they’re forced from their home, stripped of their possessions, marched to the countryside, forced to work in the fields, confined to a concentration camp and starved. Ultimately they’re separated and the parents are done away with.

Jolie draws restrained, naturalistic performances from her all-Cambodian cast, particularly young Sareum Srey Moch. There’s a stillness and a stoicism in her portrayal that makes her an unforgettable figure in this unforgettable movie.

The Meaning Behind the Yellow Flower Angelina Jolie's Six Kids All Wore to the First They Killed My Father Premiere
by Vannessa Jackson | Fri, Sep 15, 2017 7:15 PM

It's a family affair!

Angelina Jolie has been busy at work promoting her newest film First They Killed My Father out today. For Thursday night's New York City premiere, Angelina walked the red carpet with all six of her children. Her son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt was an executive producer on the film but Angelina shared that her other children were also around during filming.

"Everybody was on set," she revealed. "I can't be a parent and not have my kids around and sharing this creative life with them." The family was dressed to the nines and the actress' six children were sporting a yellow flower

The flowers appear to be plumerias, which symbolize positivity and are used to celebrate special occasions. It has been a rough year for the Jolie-Pitt family to say the least, so it's nice to see them celebrating and uniting as one.

'Stuck in the Middle' Actress Joins Angelina Jolie in 'The One and Only Ivan' (Exclusive

Ariana Greenblatt will play one of the human leads in the live-action/CG hybrid.

Ariana Greenblatt, who appears on Disney Channel’s Stuck in the Middle, has joined the cast of The One and Only Ivan, Disney's adaptation of the Newbery Medal-winning book written by Katherine Applegate.

Angelina Jolie is producing the live-action/CG hybrid as well as voicing one of the lead characters. Allison Shearmur and Brigham Taylor are also producing.

Published by HarperCollins in 2011, the book centers on a silverback gorilla named Ivan who lives in a cage in a shopping mall along with an elephant named Stella (Jolie) and a stray dog called Bob. Ivan does not remember life before the mall, but when a baby elephant named Ruby enters and Ivan finds himself taking care of her, he begins to rediscover his previous life and concocts a plan to take the baby elephant away from their abusive owner.

Greenblatt will play one of the human leads who make up the live-action portion of the project.

Brooklynn Prince, the breakout lead of acclaimed indie drama The Florida Project, is already cast as the voice of Ruby.

Thea Sharrock, director of the tearjerker Me Before You, is helming Ivan, which has a script by Mike White.

Greenblatt has been appearing on Middle since the series began in 2016. The show is now in its third season. The youngster made her feature debut in last year’s STX comedy, A Bad Moms Christmas.

Maleficent 2 Begins Shooting with Angelina Jolie This Spring

Brian Gallagher

01.05.2018

Disney's Maleficent 2 is finally moving forward after several years in development, with Angelina Jolie returning as the main character, and now we know when production will begin. While this has yet to be confirmed by the studios, a new report reveals that director Joachim Ronning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) has started the pre-production process, with principal photography slated to begin April 16 in London, which will run until August. Angelina Jolie was said to be deciding between this project and the Universal monster movie Bride of Frankenstein as her next movie, and it seems that Maleficent 2 has come out on top.

This new report also claims that Patrick Tatopoulous has been enlisted as the film's production designer, following his most recent work on Justice League, Batman v Superman and 300: Rise of an Empire. The sequel finally started moving forward in August, when Disney hired Spectre writer Jez Butterworth to write the Maleficent 2 script, after the project had been languishing in development hell for several years. Just a few months later, Joachim Ronning signed on to direct, marking his first solo directorial outing, after making his directorial breakthrough Kon-Tiki, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and directing two episodes of Marco Polo with his longtime directing partner, Espen Sandberg.

Back in April 2016, Disney set release dates for five movies, two of which were confirmed to be Maleficent 2 and Jungle Book 2, although their exact dates weren't given yet. The dates in question are July 28, 2017, April 6, 2018, August 3, 2018, December 25, 2018 and December 20, 2019. Given that filming won't start until mid-April, the first four dates are all but out of the question, especially given the amount of special effects that will likely be needed for this sequel, and the December 20, 2019 date isn't an option either, since the studio moved Star Wars 9 to that date. Disney doesn't have any movie set for April 6, but their Christopher Robin movie starring Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell is set for August 3, and the studio also has Mary Poppins Returns slated for Christmas Day.

2014's Maleficent was a huge hit for the studio, opening with the top spot with $69.4 million, en route to $241.4 million domestic, $517.1 million international and $758.5 million worldwide, from a $180 million budget. There had been talk of a Maleficent sequel shortly after the movie hit theaters, but the development was slow going. Angelina Jolie hinted at returning as the title character just a month after the movie hit theaters in the summer of 2014, but now it seems that Disney is finally ready to make the sequel happen. No story details have been given at this time, and with pre-production currently under way, it's possible that we could start getting the first wave of casting reports coming in soon.

Twins Spend $20,000 On Cosmetic Surgery To Look Like Brad Pitt

The Schlepp twins were 21-years-old when they appeared on MTV's I Want A Famous Face, where they underwent $20,000 worth of plastic surgery.

Mike had a nose job, and cheek, jaw and chin implants, while Matt had a nose job and a chin implant. The brothers also have 41 porcelain veneers between them.

"It was more than worth it," Matt said while on the show. "I feel on top of the world by the few tweaks that I went through. Go through with the surgery now because you don't want to go through life always feeling down with the way that you look."

They also claimed their new looks have heightened the attention they've received from the opposite sex.

"I've had such a dramatic change that girlfriends I hadn't seen in a while couldn't stop staring, and said they wanted to cry! If that doesn't make you feel good, then what would?” Matt said.

"I would do it ten times over. It has definitely helped me get more girls. I'll walk and get that double-take from girls and hear the whispering that follows," Mike added.

Angelina’s Feather-Strewn Red Carpet Choices Hark Back To Old Hollywood

AS the red carpet takes on a symbolic quality during the 2018 awards season, the focus has switched from designer dress tags to the motive behind the gowns. Few stars have been spotlighted and few brands name checked, as the press focusses on the bigger questions – How will the Oscars follow the black dress code of the Golden Globes? Will it bring about real change in Hollywood? – instead of sending emails on how to “get the look”.

one actress has stood out for her awards season fashion choices so far: Angelina Jolie.

from a classic black silhouette on the red carpet, attended the Critics’ Choice Awards in a custom white Ralph & Russo asymmetric dress adorned with ostrich feathers. The mood was fresh, feminine and a step on from the black feathered Atelier Versace gown worn at the Globes.

Playful yet politically aware, Jolie's latest commissions from two of her most trusted brands shows how designer-actress collaborations can adapt and evolve in tune with the changing red carpet, while reasserting her position as one of the most powerful and enduring stars on the scene. Her feathered tribute to silver-screen sirens of decades past might root her in Old Hollywood, but in the modern day, she's never looked more fabulous.
