Ovarian cancer test should be offered routinely: Screening for Angelina Jolie gene 'saves both lives and money'

• Simpler tests for gene carried by Hollywood actress could save many lives
• Researchers believe it would save the NHS more than £2.5 million a year
• Only around a third of patients in Britain currently have the blood test
Angelina Jolie had both breasts removed in a battle against BRCA gene

Testing for the 'Angelina Jolie gene' is a 'win win', researchers have said

Simpler testing for the ‘Angelina Jolie gene’ could save the lives of women and their families, British researchers believe.

Streamlining the complex process would save the cash-strapped NHS more than £2.5 million a year.

This makes it a ‘win-win’ situation, geneticists from the Institute of Cancer Research in London say.

Genetic tests allow doctors to work out the best drugs to give patients and flag up if relatives are also at risk of cancer.

Almost all of the 7,000 British women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are entitled to be tested for BRCA gene, which is carried by actress Angelina Jolie, and greatly increases the odds of ovarian, breast and prostate tumours.

However, the system is lengthy and requires that patients, who are treated by the cancer unit, attend multiple appointments in the genetics unit.

As a result, only around a third of patients have the blood test.

The ICR simplified the process by training women’s cancer doctors to give the test and only referring the women to the genetics department if their result was a concern.

Time was also saved by using a faster blood test.

The women got their results just three to four weeks, rather than the usual four to five months, according to the journal Scientific Reports.

The process was so easy that all of the 207 women offered the test had it done and, in 80 per cent of cases, the results helped doctors decide on the best treatment.

Some 33 of the women carried the BRCA gene – and some were then given drugs so new they are still in trials.

Just as importantly, relatives of these women were given the option of being tested to see if they carried the gene and so were at higher than normal risk of cancer.

Writing in the journal Scientific Reports the researchers estimate the NHS would save £2.6million in appointment costs alone by simplifying the system.

Plus 283 cases of cancer and 77 deaths a year would be prevented among relatives.

Study leader Professor Nazneen Rahman, who is also running trying to simplify genetic testing of breast cancer patients, told the BBC: ‘It is very unusual to get a win-win all round that allows us to help more people but doesn’t cost more.’

Relatives of women with the faulty BRCA gene were given the option of being tested to see if they carried the gene and so were at higher than normal risk of cancer

Katherine Taylor, chief executive of charity Ovarian Cancer Action, said: ‘As Angelina Jolie and others have shown us, BRCA gene mutations can have a life-changing impact.

‘For women with ovarian cancer, knowing you carry a BRCA gene mutation can determine your cancer drugs.

‘It’s also vital information for families – by identifying BRCA before cancer hits, lives can be saved.’

Professor Paul Workman, the Institute of Cancer Research’s chief executive, said: ‘Twenty years ago, the BRCA2 gene was identified at the ICR.

‘This study is an excellent example of how science such as this can be turned into something very practical that can improve the patient care and save lives.

Tomb Raider star Miss Jolie elected to have both breasts removed after discovering her DNA gave her an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer – eight times the chance for an average woman.

With the flawed gene also greatly increasing her the odds of ovarian cancer, she had a second round of major surgery in which her ovaries and Fallopian tubes removed.

£300 DNA tests could save thousands of women at risk of inherited cancers

• Ross Lydall

Preventative surgery: Angelina Jolie carries the BRCA mutant gene. She lost her mother to ovarian cancer.

Fast-track DNA tests costing the NHS £300 could save the lives of thousands of women at risk from inherited cancers each year, London scientists revealed today.

They called for the blood tests to be offered to every woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer after early detection of the deadly BRCA mutant gene enabled almost 80 per cent of patients in a trial to receive better care.

Its discovery also enabled an average of three female relatives of each patient testing positive for the BRCA mutation, carried by Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, to undergo their own potentially life-saving checks.

Jolie, who lost her mother at 56 to ovarian cancer and her aunt to breast cancer, decided to undergo a preventative double mastectomy in 2013 and have her ovaries removed last year.

The Institute of Cancer Research today announced the success of a trial that rapidly tested ovarian cancer patients for BRCA mutations, which cause a massively increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. BRCA testing is already offered by the NHS but only about a third of patients have tests because they have to wait about 20 weeks and apply to different hospitals.

The new system developed by the ICR enables the test to be done via local cancer clinics, with results within three weeks.
Professor Nazneen Rahman, head of cancer genetics at the ICR, said offering all ovarian cancer patients immediate genetic screening on diagnosis could have a huge impact on survival rates of the women and their female relatives.

She added: “I think the real benefit of this is in prevention. About 1,000 of the 7,000 ovarian cancers a year [in the UK] are due to this BRCA mutation. In theory all of these are preventable.” About 7,000 UK women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year and it causes 4,000 deaths a year.

The breakthrough has been achieved by streamlining genetic testing. Previously reading a patient’s entire DNA code was an expensive and laborious process akin to “reading a really long novel looking for one spelling mistake”, Professor Rahman said.
Advances in technology at the ICR mean its sequencing machine is able to read the DNA code of 100 patients a week. About 2,500 UK women develop breast or ovarian cancer each year because they have a BRCA mutation.

The ICR study enrolled 207 ovarian cancer patients at the Royal Marsden hospital, 33 of whom were found to carry the faulty gene.
Preeti Dudakia, 49, an ovarian cancer patient who took part in the study, said: “When it came back positive, I was able to have a treatment only given to women with a BRCA mutation.

“If my mother had been able to have this testing when she got ovarian cancer I would have known I was at risk sooner. My situation could have been completely different.”

The new system, which is now standard practice at the Marsden, could save the NHS £2.6 million a year. The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Looking at the pics of AJBP so affectionate & loving.... just made me smile all day. They are like teenagers in love. Cute & sweet. Their pics are really different than those of other celebs. AJBP are all natural & real. BP is really frisky. Tabloids don't like candid pics of AJBP to come out. It destroys the lies after lies they publish about them. Good for AJBP, they just continue their lives loving & living....together.

Brad Pitt and Ben Stiller are teaming up for a midlife crisis comedy

Ben Stiller’s spent part of his middle age years in onscreen midlife crisis, from Greenberg to The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty to While We’re Young—hell, even Zoolander 2. And it looks like it’s time to break out the skateboard and/or wallet chain again, as Stiller’s currently in talks to join a new comedy about a man questioning his life’s choices.

The film, Brad’s Status, will be directed by Enlightened’s Mike White, who’s also written the script. Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment is producing, though the name in the title is probably just a coincidence, because Pitt has almost certainly never had a midlife crisis. Stiller is poised to play the Brad in question, who “despite a good career and happy family, is obsessed with the better fortunes of his old friends from school.” When Brad takes his son to look at East Coast colleges, he’s “forced to confront his friends and his feelings of failures.” We’re sure his son will be delighted to watch his dad’s insecurities play out before him, and that it will in no way inform his college experience. After all, the movie is promising “hilarious and poignant results.”

To those who can comprehend & get it...

(cr JJ)

A poem by Dawn.....

She was at the right place
at the right time
And fame swallowed her life
And as luck would have it
To Brad Pitt she became a wife
But as time rolled by
His love came and went
For her focus was on stardom
She was totally hell bent

She worked the press to further her career
And play the woman wronged
While the mini vans Moms
Shared in her tears
She was a victim, all righteous and pure
America's Rachel was gaining allure

Her cleavages plunged, her Weave sunshine streaked
Her snap on nipples high and proud
Her body well toned, her nose mildly tweaked
She would be heard, her effort was loud

She basked in revenge, she lied to her core
And filmed many a dud
But she was really a bore
And as interesting as mud

A loser in love
Men came and they went
Her loser image
Must really be spent
In need of repair
She plucked her a man
And had an affair

He left a dear love
But she didn't care

She spun her image as I am so hot
Her body, her skin, her hair
Is all she could talk
Mic at her mouth she was ever so fair

The tabs jumped aboard
Her bangin' bod
On pages were poured
Inauthentic galore
She twisted and writhed
Oh, this, I abhor.

She pretended she was private
As she seeded the press
Oh, if they stopped writing
She'd be such a mess.

One day By the Sea
The spin altered course
My gosh, they wrote
Is that a pod with a pea?

Her image Nazi
Ran to the phone
Oh, no, he retorted
She just swallowed a bone

Enraged and atwitter
She took to her pen
Ever so bitter
She squawked like a hen

How dare you shame my body
Lauding is all you can do
I am the protector of women
Who do as I do.

We stay true to the game
that nurtures our fame
So don't turn on me now
As this I cannot allow

I am the fairest
You must recall
How dare you defy
I'm a living doll

But I don't care
I live in my skin
Unless you, of course
Alter the Spin!

Is this the greatest voice cast ever?

Kung Fu Panda 3 (Kung Fu Panda 1 + 2 also available)

Movies On Demand > Virgin Movies. Also available in HD. Cert PG

Whether you’re a fan of animated action adventure, super-cool martial arts moves or just Jack Black running around being very, very funny, we’ve got some excellent news: Kung Fu Panda 3 has high-kicked its way onto Virgin Movies! The third film in the hugely popular franchise (the movies have taken upwards of $1.5billion at the box office, no biggie) sees Po (Black) turn teacher and train a group of young pandas to help him defeat a new, supernatural nemesis. And, in case you haven’t caught up yet, you can also watch the first two on Virgin Movies. Don’t we spoil you?

So, what makes this film extra-special? Well, aside from being hilarious and heartwarming, it’s
also got one of the best voice casts Hollywood has ever put together. Sure, it’s easier to bag the biggest names for animations; after all, they don’t always have to be in the same room (or country) at the same time. But still, this group of actors reads like the guest list at the Oscars. But don’t take our word for it, just look at the list below.

You know her from: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Mr & Mrs Smith, The Tourist.
Why we love her: Because she’s the woman who can do it all: mother of six, Oscar winning-actress, producer and director, human rights advocate, conservationist, honorary dame… we’re exhausted just writing about her
.
Who she voices: Master Tigress, the coolest fighter in the Furious Five.

The Jolie-Pitt children

You know them from: Aside from Shiloh’s appearance as a baby in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, we’ve mainly spotted them trotting around the globe with mum Ange and dad Brad.
Why we love them: Because they’re following in the footsteps of their famous parents, and doing it together! For their first film, these four have chosen wisely – which kids wouldn’t want to play a super-cool Panda clan in a Hollywood movie?!
Who they voice: Pax is Yoo, Knox is Ku Ku, Zahara is Meng Meng and Shiloh is Shuai Shuai.

Summer special

Fighting outdated traditions

17/07/2016 – by Dagmar Wolf

The movie “Difret” by Ethiopian director Zeresenay Berhane Mehari bridges the divide between traditional rural worldviews and modern Ethiopia. It offers insights into a culture that the western public normally does not get.

Hirut, a 14-year old girl, is proud of the report card she has just been given. The teacher even praised her in class. As she is happily running home, she suddenly hears hoofbeats. Armed men on horseback surround her – and then abduct her. The report card ends up in the dust.

Hirut is locked up in a cabin where her kidnapper rapes her. According to a tradition called “telefa”, such violence goes unpunished if the man later marries his victim. Telefa has officially been declared illegal, but is still quite common in rural areas.

Hirut manages to escape and takes along her tormentor’s rifle. He runs after her, and she shoots him. As result, she is accused of murder and is likely to be sentenced to death.

Meaza Ashenafi, a lawyer, volunteers to defend Hirut in court. She leads Adenet, a non-governmental organisation that promotes women’s and children’s rights. The film is not an emotional court drama, however, but takes a close look at the social context in a very sensitive manner. The gaps between rural and urban life are huge. In Addis Ababa, the capital city, professionals use computers and telephones, but time seems to stand still in what looks like Arcadian villages.

In the villages, the judges of the state court matter less than the council of elders. When Hirut’s father speaks in defence of his daughter before the council, men from the village praise tradition and insult the local teachers whom they blame of instilling the wrong values in the young generation. The elders decide that Hirut’s father must pay her kidnapper’s father a compensation and that the girl may not return to live in the village. The only upside is that they do not demand her death.

In the meantime, the lawyer gets Hirut into an urban orphanage. For a while, the very existence of her NGO is at risk. The reason is that Meaza decides to take a government minister to court, arguing that Hirut is in trouble because the administration he leads is not enforcing the law. In response, the government first suspends her NGO’s licence, but then surprisingly renews it. In the end, the court that tries Hirut finds her not guilty. The media cover the event – and radio news is particularly important. It is not a perfect happy ending, because the teenager’s life has been uprooted for ever.

Difret ist based on a real case that set the precedent of telefa definitely being illegal in 1996. This was an important turning point in terms of rural women’s rights. The punishment for telefa can be 15 years of prison – or more. Nonetheless, the tradition is still alive in some remote rural areas even today.

Accordingly, the director wants to convince and enlighten Ethiopians. He treats all of the film’s characters with equal respect. They state clearly what they think is right – and why they think so. The film does not use artistic ambiguity. Its focus is on unambiguous debate and comprehensive discourse.

Zeresenay went to film school in Los Angeles, but he does not indulge in Hollywood effects and does not use sensationalist scenes. He is not keen on breath-taking suspense, but rather wants to raise awareness. Therefore, the film’s original language is Amharic rather than English. It certainly helped to attract international attention, however, that Hollywood star Angelina Jolie was the movie’s executive producer.

The Ethiopian government supported the production of Difret too. Unfortunately, there is reason to doubt that the Ethiopian state would still be prepared to backtrack in confrontation with an assertive NGO activists the way it did in the case of Adenet. The same party is still in power, but it’s attitude is becoming ever more authoritarian. If it decides to close down an NGO these days, it seems unlikely that it might reconsider and allow the NGO to carry on afterwards.

Director: Zeresenay Berhane Mehari

so sad

Hospital Treating Child Victims of Nice Truck Attack Hosted Angelina Jolie's Twin Delivery 8 Years Ago

3:33 PM PDT 7/17/2016

by  Dana KeRenowned

pediatric facility Fondation Lenval, swarmed with paparazzi before and during the high-profile 2008 birth of Knox and Vivienne, now sees some reporters in tears over the deaths of 10 children and injuries of many more.

Right now, the distinctive, six-story building with its multi-colored, Mediterranean-blue glass facade overlooking the shimmering Bay of Angels is the saddest place in the south of France.

Inside the Fondation Lenval, Nice’s renowned pediatric hospital, lie maimed children, some of Muslim descent, who were severely injured in Thursday’s deadly truck massacre. Ten children were killed in the attack, including 11-year-old Brodie Copeland of Austin, Texas, whose father Sean also died in the attack.

“It was like a war zone out there,” one Nice-area psychologist told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve offered my help to the team of doctors and counselors in place and I’m waiting to be called up.”

The driver of the truck who killed 84 people and injured at least 202, 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, drove by the hospital as he zigzagged down the Promenade des Anglais on Bastille Day.

Some children are in comas and one 10-year-old had not yet been identified as of late Friday, according to one doctor at the hospital. Parents came to the hospital frantically searching for their children after they were separated from them in the chaos following the murders, according to Stephanie Simpson, a spokeswoman for the hospital. She said that the children are emotionally as well as physically traumatized.

Meet the 6-year-old autistic artist whose paintings have been bought by Angelina Jolie

Yes, she's just 6 years old. And yes, her paintings will leave you gaping.

It's not uncommon to hear of people with mental and physical disorders achieving things most people can't.

Iris and Thula on a voyage.

Here's another such story--a 6-year-old autistic girl who is already a sensation. For what? Her paintings. Yes, we didn't know 6-year-olds could paint that well either! In fact, such is her artistic caliber that not only has her work been lauded by art critics, it's also been bought by renowned Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie.

When Iris Grace Halmshaw was born, her parents knew she would need extra help and got her a therapy pet--a cat named Thula.

Thula never leaves Iris'side even when she is painting.

After Thula came into her life, Iris showed immense improvement and was able to communicate through her paintings.

Iris with her mother, Arabella Carter-Johnston.

Little Iris was introduced to painting by her parents when she was undergoing speech therapy, that was when they realised that she's been blessed with amazing artistic skills.

Born with severe autism, for a long time Iris was unable to communicate, even non-verbally. Her mother, Arabella Carter-Johnston, described her as "trapped in her own world, unreachable".

http://www.nephjc.com/news/2016/7/19/chapter-four-angelina-jolie-my-choice

July 19, 2016
Chapter Four Angelina Jolie: My Choice

Chapter 4 begins to lay the groundwork for Topol’s thesis that individuals should have access to their genetic data unrestricted by FDA regulation or physician order. But first, he starts with an extended anecdote about Angelina Jolie, the actress and philanthropist, of whom he is clearly a BIG fan. (Have I mentioned that she’s beautiful yet in this paragraph?)

In 2013, Jolie published an op-ed in the New York Times where she disclosed that she had recently undergone a prophylactic mastectomy after discovering that she was a carrier for a BRCA1 mutation that gave her an estimated 87% risk of breast cancer. BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations account for approximately 5-10% of all breast cancers and about 20-25% of hereditary breast cancers. Jolie’s mother’s long battle with breast cancer and death at age 56 was the impetus for Jolie’s investigation into her own risk. Jolie’s disclosure sparked a run on testing for BRCA1/2 mutations and increased awareness about the role of genetic testing in determining risk of disease. Importantly, it also was a demonstration that an individual could use their own data to make changes that alter their risk. Jolie’s op-ed:

“symbolized the new era of medicine, whereby access to critical information about oneself – in this case genomic information – leads to the individual’s empowerment to make a pivotal choice that determines one’s fate.

Eric Topol

Topol next turns to the method by which we will all gain access to our genetic data: consumer genomics companies such as 23andMe. 23andMe is a company that offers direct to consumer genetic testing that provides information about risk for a variety of diseases including heart disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, cancer, etc.

In 2013, the US Food and Drug Administration sent them a cease and desist letter stating they didn’t have approval to market their product. This faceoff between the FDA and 23andMe was framed as a showdown between the paternalistic medical establishment who wants to hoard all genetic data for themselves and the individual’s right to their own genetic information as provided by Robin Hood–like private companies who only have the patient’s best interests at heart. I find this argument a bit simplistic and think there is a way for individual genetic information to be provided to patients in a way that is appropriately regulated.

To close the chapter, Topol returns to the BRCA story. In the old days of genetic testing, it wasn’t uncommon for newly identified genes to be patented. In fact, 40% of our genes were patented upon discovery. Myriad Genetics, the company that held the patent for BRCA1/2 testing, held on tight to their intellectual property, essentially holding a monopoly in the US and driving prices up to $3000-4000 per sequence. This was clearly not a situation that was good for patients or physicians. This being the US, Myriad Genetics was sued and the case wound its way all the way to the Supreme Court, who did the right thing and ruled unanimously that DNA is a product of nature and not eligible for patenting (ABC News). This opened the door for a number of other companies to get in on the action of BRCA1/2 testing, essentially driving down costs and increasing access to thousands of women. “Collectively, in this chapter, we have seen the powerful impact of one individual, one company, two governmental bureaus (FDA and the Supreme Court), and two genes in dealing with public access to genomic information.”

I’ve followed the BRCA story over the years with great interest because I have predominantly French-Canadian ancestry that puts me at higher risk of being a BRCA1/2 mutation carrier, so this chapter resonated with me. Of course women should have access to BRCA testing to help frame their risk of cancer and allow them to make very personal decisions about what to do. Genetic testing as offered by companies like 23andMe may very well offer individuals information that will allow them to modify their risk behaviors based on their genetic background. However, the big issue that was not addressed in this chapter is the disparity in access to the testing. BRCA testing is a covered preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, however there are still millions of women in this country without insurance. While $99 for a direct to consumer genetic risk panel may not seem like a lot of money to pay myself, it may be a huge burden for a number of my patients who may barely be able to afford the copays on their prescriptions. This inequality in access leads to a 2 tier system of relatively rich individuals who have access to their own genetic information and can make decisions based on this and relatively poor individuals who do not. Until the payers (Government and private insurance) are convinced that there is a benefit to testing and allow for truly universal coverage, this disparity will continue.

Brad Pitt Looks So Handsome Catching Flight Out of Town

Brad Pitt looks so handsome while arriving at LAX Airport on Tuesday afternoon (July 19) in Los Angeles.

The 52-year-old actor took a flight out of town that day.

In case you missed it, earlier this month, Brad and Angelina celebrated twins Knox and Vivienne‘s eighth birthday! The happy couple went out to breakfast and did some shopping to celebrate on the special day (July 12).

10+ pictures inside of Brad Pitt stepping out of his car at LAX Airport…
