Personal brands that inspire: Angelina Jolie
Posted by Danny Hackman at 03:30:00

Angelina Jolie has become one of the world's most loved film stars, as well as being admired for her humanitarian work. What's her personal branding secret?

Great personal brands are those that make an impact on us. Somehow they are different and stand out from the crowd. While effective personal branding can be achieved by anyone, not just Hollywood stars, it’s sometimes useful to look at successful celebrity personal brands to learn from them.

Angelina Jolie has built a much-admired personal brand. With an Academy Award to her name, as well as two Screen Actors Guild Awards and three Golden Globe Awards, she is one of Hollywood’s most highly paid actresses and is also well respected outside of the silver screen environment for her work with refugees.

In her recent op-ed in the New York Times, Angelina shared her decision to have a preventative double mastectomy. This demonstrates one of the most fundamental building blocks of personal branding: authenticity.

By opening up about something that is very personal to her and taking a stand on an issue, Angelina is allowing herself to be vulnerable, which is a hugely attractive trait in a personal brand. She has touched thousands of people who can relate to her story in some way.

Instead of choosing to remain silent about her surgery, she has been honest and authentic and, in the process, made people feel an emotional connection to her. She has also possibly even saved lives by educating people on the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases the chance of breast and ovarian cancer in women who carry it.

Learn from Angelina and make sure that your personal brand is built on authenticity. Ensure that your behaviour reflects your values; that you don’t “put on a show” for people; and that you don’t change when you’re around different groups of people. Personal branding doesn’t mean pretending to be someone you’re not – it means having the courage to be a little bit vulnerable with people and learning to show people the value you can add.

Rio 2016 Truce Mural inaugurated at Olympic Village

Event attended by child refugees and IOC president Thomas Bach highlights role of sport in bringing people together.

The week began with a poignant moment at the Olympic Village, as the Rio 2016 Truce Mural was inaugurated. The mural has been a powerful symbol of union amongst the peoples of the world since its first appearance at the Sydney 2000 Games, and allows athletes to share their messages of peace and friendship by writing on the wall.

The Coração Jolie Children’s Choir, made up of 26 young refugees who now live in Brazil, took part in the event. The group are sponsored by Brazilian NGO I Know My Rights, and are supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

President Thomas Bach also took part, along with Rio 2106 president Carlos Nuzman, and the mayor of the Olympic Village, Janeth Arcain.

During his speech, Mr Bach said that the Olympic Village is the heart of the Games and is a place where people of all races and creeds live side-by-side in harmony.

“This is a place in which to share the excitement of the Games, to make friends and to share emotions. The Olympic Village is the best example that it is possible for the world to be united, which is the true Olympic spirit,” he said.

“The mural is there for athletes to share their messages of peace with the world. Today, we join with the United Nations in calling for solidarity amongst peoples,” added Bach.

Nuzman was also moved by the occasion, saying: “This mural is a symbol showing that the truce can be real, and not only in our dreams. I am very happy that this is happening here in Rio.”

Inspired by a tradition dating back to the Ancient Olympic Games, when hostilities amongst warring factions were suspended to allow athletes to journey to the Greek city of Olympia, the truce today forms part of the agenda of the United Nations’ General Assembly, which calls for peace through sport ahead of every edition of the world’s greatest sporting event.

Brad Pitt Gets Dapper in the First Look at Robert Zemeckis’ WWII Thriller ‘Allied’

Paramount has released the first Allied image online. Per the official synopsis, the film is “the story of intelligence officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war.”

It’s been a while since director Robert Zemeckis was in any sort of contention for the awards race even though he’s made awards-friendly dramas since 1994’s Forrest Gump. Allied could easily put him back in the race with its World War II setting, Oscar-winning leads, and romantic-thriller plot. The film could also boost the Oscar chances for Pitt and Cotillard. Producer Graham King talked up their performances to People:

“It was crucial for Brad and Marion to not only begin rehearsing together before the shoot, but they also spent a lot of time developing their characters with the director, Robert Zemeckis,” King says about the lead-up to filming. “By the time we got to set, it was really amazing to see these characters already feel lived in and real.”

It will be interesting to see if Allied pops up at any film festivals before its theatrical release date or if the studio feels comfortable enough letting it bypass the festival circuit. It certainly has the starpower and pedigree to attract attention on its own.

Check out the Allied image below. The film opens November 23rd and also stars Lizzy Caplan and Matthew Goode.

Charlie Hunnam's Lost City of Z set for world premiere as NYFF's closing film

The Lost City of Z

Posted August 3 2016 — 11:54 AM EDT

After scoring critical praise for movies like The Immigrant and Two Lovers in competition at Cannes, director James Gray has his sights set on another major festival as the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced Wednesday that his next project, The Lost City of Z, will have its world premiere as the 54th New York Film Festival’s closing night film.

The film, based on David Grann’s nonfiction book of the same name, follows British Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), an explorer searching for a lost city in the depths of the Amazon. His obsessive search begins to ruin his reputation and his personal relationships, including at home with his wife (Sienna Miller) and children. Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland also star.

“It’s truly a dream come true for me to have The Lost City of Z selected for the closing night of the New York Film Festival,” Gray said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more honored that the film’s world premiere will be in my hometown, a city I still love above all others.”

The Lost City of Z was shot by prolific cinematographer Darius Khondji, who was nominated for an Oscar for framing 1997’s Evita. In addition to DP’ing Gray’s The Immigrant, he also worked on Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and Lady Gaga’s “Marry the Night” music video.

Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Anthony Katagas, and Dale Armin Johnson produced the project, which was executive-produced by Brad Pitt and Marc Butan. Gardner, Pitt, Katagas, and Kleiner worked together on the 2013 Best Picture-winning film 12 Years a Slave.

Annette Bening’s 20th Century Women, which test-screened for audiences in New York earlier this week, was previously announced as the New York Film Festival’s centerpiece selection. Ava DuVernay’s new documentary The 13th is set to become the first nonfiction film to open the event in the festival’s 54-year history.

The Lost City of Z will screen Saturday, Oct. 15 as a gala event. The NYFF, which typically launches awards-bound films into the Oscar race, runs from Sept. 30-Oct. 16.

Brexit effect helps BBC Radio 4 Today programme win record audience

Brexit proved good for business at the Today programme after the flagship Radio 4 current affairs show surged to its highest-ever listening figures. Today’s weekly audience soared to 7.35m listeners, during a quarter which covered the EU Referendum and the political shockwaves from the June result.

The figure exceeded the programme’s previous record high of 7.18m in 2011, according to figures from listening bureau, Rajar. The Today programme team, which has successfully integrated recent arrival Nick Robinson, attracted nearly 600,000 new listeners since the Spring. The audience has increased from 6.68m year-on-year. The programme’s Referendum coverage included long-form pieces by John Humphrys about the economy and immigration. Brexit boost to radio and newspapers A BBC spokesman said the speech station had benefited from “listeners wanting access to high quality, impartial journalism as they woke up during those crucial campaigning months.” The Brexit effect also boosted print media with an extra 3m national newspapers sold in the month after the vote. The Guardian’s circulation rose by 3.63%, The Times was up 2.51% whilst the i paper enjoyed a 2.97% increase. The new Today listeners stayed with Radio 4, which itself enjoyed a record audience of 11.51m during the quarter, up by nearly one million on last year.

Angelina Jolie-Pitt’s examination of sexual violence in conflicts was a Radio 4 highlight

Woman’s Hour was boosted by a “takeover” from guest editors including Angelina Jolie-Pitt and Mary Berry. Gwyneth Williams, Controller Radio 4, said: “Our listeners trust us to bring them a uniquely rich and surprising mix of programmes – from the biggest political interviews to the context in global debates, science, original drama and satire. “Rather than simply wanting a quick fix on the headlines as they wake up, our discerning listeners turn to Today to hear some of the best journalism and interviewing in the world, giving them a deeper understanding of the stories of the day.” Read more at: https://inews.co.uk/essentials/culture/radio/brexit-effect-helps-bbc-radio-4-today-programme-win-record-audience/

Kung Fu Panda 3’ Continues to Kick Up DreamWorks Animation Revenues in Q2

DreamWorks Animation beat expectations on Wednesday when the company filed its second quarter earnings ahead of its pending merger with Comcast.

The company made $220.9 million in revenue, representing a 29 percent gain compared to a year ago, when it reported a revenue of $170.8 million.

A good portion of Q2 revenue came from DreamWorks’ feature films distribution arm, with the continued success of “Kung Fu Panda 3.”

On an adjusted basis, DreamWorks reported a profit of 13 cents per share, the company told TheWrap. (This figure does not appear in the company’s Q2 filing.) That’s better than the 7 cent per-share loss that analysts, on average, were expecting. Unadjusted, Q2 ushered in a profit of $1.4 million, or 3 cents per share, for the company.

Analysts also predicted a significantly lower revenue of $182.11 million.

DreamWorks’ stock has risen by more than 95 percent in the past year, spiking dramatically in late April when the deal with Comcast was first announced.

Shares of the animation company’s stock remained virtually unmoved, dropping slightly by .01 percent to $40.98.

The company enjoyed a big boost in Q1, too, reporting $190.4 million in revenue that exceeded Wall Street expectations.

With a revenue gain of nearly 15 percent year over year in Q1, the company was helped by successes in its television series and specials, consumer products and new media units as well as from lucrative licensing and distribution deals, for example the home releases of “The Penguins of Madagascar” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”
DreamWorks beat expectations in Q1 by nearly $8 million, as analysts expected a revenue of just $182.6 million.

The company also blew away analyst expectations in Q1, who predicted a profit of 1 cent per share. Instead, the company reported a profit of $13.8 million, or 16 cents a share — swinging from a year-earlier loss of $54.8 million, or 64 cents a share.

The Angelina Jolie beauty look book

Angelina Jolie: Beauty evolution

When you think about the most glamorous A-Listers in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie is one of the first names that springs to mind.

Starting out way back in the 90s, Angelina has had quite the career that spans well over 20 years. Model, film star, film maker, humanitarian - she's pretty much done it all. Angelina Jolie had a number of notable roles during her film career, from the lead in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, to starring alongside now-husband Brad Pitt in Mr & Mrs Smith (aka the film that brought Brangelina into our lives).

As well as an impressive film career, she has a number of other impressive job titles under her belt. In 2001, she was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Centre, and was promoted to Special Envoy in 2012, working tirelessly on global displacement issues. Earlier this year, she was appointed a visiting professor at LSE's Centre for Women, Peace and Security.

Of course, she and her husband Brad Pitt are one of Hollywood's most iconic couples, ever. Although they got married fairly recently in 2014, they were together for ten years before that and have six children. There's no doubt about it, Brad and Angelina are always giving us #relationshipgoals (although did you see who almost stopped Brangelina from happening?). Be sure to check out their most beautiful moments as one of the most loved-up celebrity items out there.

From red carpet looks to iconic film characters, as well as some throwback pictures from way back when, we've rounded up her best moments for all your hair and beauty inspiration needs.

Here she is at the 20th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards in Los Angeles last year, with luscious dark, curled locks that are giving us all the hair envy. It's fair to say she always looks this good: Scroll through to see Angelina Jolie's best looks of all time...
