Top Movies 2014: Disney Has Three — ‘Guardians’ & ‘Maleficent’ Come From Summer

As we head into the end of summer with Labor Day approaching, the Walt Disney Co. can boast three of the Top Ten movies so far this year with Captain America: The Winter Soldier topping the bunch with a total domestic box office take of $259.7M and two other summer films also in the mix: Maleficent at $237M and Guardians of the Galaxy hovering over $252.2M after this weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy may also take the No. 1 slot again this weekend, after being in the No. 2 spot for the past two weekends in a row, reminiscent of its blockbuster animated film Frozen jumping back into the top spot in its sixth week of release. Kudos to Marvel for starting a new franchise.  Marvel was confident that they had a hit early on: At Comic-Con, the studio announced a sequel to Guardians before it even opened. Eight of the top ten, of course, are summer tentpole releases and only one — the buddy comedy 22 Jump Street — is R-rated.

Leading up to this weekend, the summer box office frame year to date, which is defined as May 2 to Aug. 20,  is down 15.2% versus the same period in 2013 when the industry was on its way to posting a record box office year.  This August is up 11.5% versus the same time span last August, propped by Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

So far, here are the Top Ten titles of 2014 at the domestic box office:

1). Captain America: The Winter Soldier (DIS) / PG-13 / April 4th / $259.7M

2). The Lego Movie (WB) / PG / Feb. 7th / $257.7M

3). Guardians of the Galaxy (DIS) / PG-13 / August 1 / $252M

4). Transformers: Age of Extinction (PAR) / PG / June 27th / $243.4M

5). Maleficent (DIS) / PG / May 30th / $237M

6). X-Men: Days Of Future Past (FOX) / PG-13 / May 23rd / $232.2M

7). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (SONY) / PG-13 / May 2nd / $202.7M

8. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (FOX) / PG-13 / July 11 / $204M (through this weekend)

9). Godzilla (WB) / PG-13 / May 16 / $200.6M

10). 22 Jump Street (SONY) / R / June 13 / $190M

Western New York community establishes monument to ‘Unbroken’ hero

OLEAN (AP) >> A western New York community has installed a granite monument as a tribute to Louis Zamperini, whose story of survival during World War II is the subject of a best-selling book and a Hollywood movie.

Zamperini was born in 1917 in Olean, a city near the Pennsylvania border 60 miles southeast of Buffalo. He was 2 when his Italian immigrant parents moved the family to Torrance, California.

He was a world-class Olympian distance runner in the 1930s. During the war, Zamperini survived 47 days on a raft after his bomber crashed in the Pacific. He spent more than two years as a prisoner of the Japanese. He died in July at 97.

His story was told in the 2010 best-seller “Unbroken.” The Angelina Jolie-directed film is being released in December.

Zamperini’s monument was being unveiled Saturday afternoon in Olean’s War Veterans Park.

Leading the effort to create the tribute was local businessman Jim Bardenett, whose grandparents became friends of Zamperini’s parents during the family’s stay in Olean. The Zamperini family lived in a second-story apartment over the grandparents’ Italian grocery story, and Bardenett’s grandmother was Lou’s godmother, Bardenett said.

A member of the Olean monument committee went to school with Zamperini in California and remained in touch with his family over the years, Bardenett added.

“He wasn’t here long, but we still feel connected to him in various ways,” he said.

The 7-foot-tall, black granite monument weighs 5,000 pounds and features images of Zamperini during his Olympic and wartime years, and a 300-word story about his life.

“We want people to bring their children to that spot and read the story so they don’t forget not only Louis, but all the citizens of Olean who gave their full measure during World War II,” Bardenett said.

Most of the $30,000 cost of the monument and an adjacent granite bench was covered by donations sent in by individuals, churches and organizations, some from as far away as California. The Legislature in Cattaraugus County, where Olean is located, pitched in $5,000, Bardenett said.

Knees up! Best of summer party rosé wines

LOOKING for a summer party wine? Our expert picks his favourite rosés

By: Jamie Goode
Published: Sun, August 24, 2014

Even wine buffs sometimes like to relax and just enjoy the moment, and that’s where inexpensive, undemanding rosé comes into play – especially on a sunny afternoon.

These days, however, pay a little more and you can take your pick from some seriously sophisticated bottles.

In fact, you could say we’re living in a golden age for pink drinks.

7. Miraval Rosé 2013, Côtes de Provence, France - £17.99, Majestic, 13% alcohol

If you like your wine with a dash of celebrity, this up-market rosé hails from the French estate of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Very good it is too, with a nice balance of herbs along with cherry fruit and lovely purity.

Androgeny heights

Trouser suits are back in vogue, but power dressing no longer needs to be overwhelmingly masculine

It takes Angelina Jolie wearing a tuxedo to the Baftas – an antidote to the red carpet gown – for the trend to follow suit and put androgyny back on the fashion map. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that trouser-suit sales have jumped by 157 per cent, according to Debenhams.

The trend has been triggered by designers such as Stella McCartney, The Row, Hermès and a host of others for winter 2014. McCartney’s silk versions, The Row’s sharp tailoring and Hermès’s more oversize, languid looks are new interpretations of the familiar theme. For those who have had enough of dresses, can’t face a 1960s revival, are bored by too much print and detest split midis, a suit can be just the ticket for a winter buy.

Dressing “like a man” is a meaningless phrase these days, when ideas of masculine and feminine are fluid, when everybody wears the same – parkas, jeans, runners, city shorts – although the Marc Jacobs skirts for men have yet to be widely copied. Concepts of hard and soft dressing are common to both sexes, an indication of how fashion has always been obsessed with gender identity and fascinated by crossover attire. At a time when younger men wear more colour, skinnier clothes and aren’t afraid of handbags, the tomboy look is easy for women to copy – with the added frisson of high heels, chunky sandals or flats. Nothing too blokeish, mind you – and certainly no ties.

Women who dress for power have always dressed in clothes associated with male authority – sharp-shouldered dark suits and military coats, but with subtle differences. It reached extremes in the 1980s when baseball shoulders and bouffant hairstyles underscored the fact that women were squaring up to new responsibilities – that look seems tragic now. But it’s only two years since Phoebe Philo at Celine put trousers under dresses, and as this shoot shows, a full skirt under a mannish jacket can look so of-the-moment today. Sometimes power can be conveyed with accessories – chunky leather boots, punk jewellery, dark as night shades – and slicked back hair.

The high-street chains, Zara, H&M and Penneys, are full of skinny and crop trousers, slope-shouldered coats and Crombies, with some animal print still livening things up – and tuxedos, of course. Here’s how to put it together.

Stella McCartney, young fan both call out Sir Paul for ALS ice bucket challenge

August 23, 2014

Stella McCartney posted an ALS ice bucket challenge video with Chris Martin on YouTube Saturday. And the pair called out her father, Sir Paul McCartney, to do likewise.

As the video opens, McCartney said, “I'm the fashion designer. I'm not going to get wet.” But seconds later, the pair were doused with ice water and both screamed loudly as the cold water hit them. “We'd like to nominate Bono, Sir Paul McCartney …,” said Martin. “And Angelina Jolie,” said Stella McCartney.

ALS announced as of Aug. 23, the ALS Association has received $62.5 million in donations compared to $2.4 million in the exact same period from July 29 to August 23 last year. These donations have come from existing donors and 1.2 million new donors to The Association, it said.

The campaign has gone viral partly through the use of social media and hashtags #icebucketchallenge, #alsicebucketchallenge, and #strikeoutals. Other celebrities who have done the challenge include KISS, Def Leppard, actor Ian McKellan, singer 50 Cent, Charles Barkley, singer Kelly Clarkson, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy, Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona and actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

No, she will not do it.
I think it is becoming who is who and that is never good.

Omg! That kitten is so darn cute!  cherry

I agree. It's like they're just doing it for the sake of being "cool" or "in" but like i said, if they are really donating while doing the bucket challenge then it's acceptable, as long as they donate and spread the awareness.

Oh yeah? I didn't know. Is it also a celebrity who nominated her first?  farao I know Brad was nominated a while back but i couldn't remember who it was. They probably won't do it but wouldn't it be cute if they do? Ah, if they would do it then i might actually love this challenge now!  rendeer

Yayy! That is awesome! I'm glad it's selling. I think it's a bad ass shoes and very fierce but it's also one of those shoes that i think that only celebrity can pull for RC and events. Apparently, everyone wants a piece of Maleficent shoes!  Basketball I just don't like the name though, Malangeli. I know it's a combination of Maleficent and Angelina but it would've been better if it sounds like Jolieficent or something catchy!  pirat

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt Arrive in Nice with the Whole Family!
Angelina Jolie makes her way off a private jet after touching down at the airport on Friday (August 22) in Nice, France.

The 39-year-old actress was joined by her fiance Brad Pitt and their children (not pictured). They are likely going to be spending the rest of the summer at their home in Miraval.

Angelina recently told EW that she had the chance to show Louis Zamperini, the subject of her upcoming movie Unbroken, a cut of the film before he died last month.

“I brought it on my laptop to the hospital,” Angelina said. “It was a deeply moving, very profound few hours of my life. Telling his story is a giant responsibility.”
